Talk of Provost Joseph Wood’s self-created Research Initiative placed him in the University spotlight recently, prompting some students to wonder who the provost is, and what he does.

By June, WMPG is expecting to install a new transmitter and to be broadcasting digitally. Unlike existing satellite broadcast radio, such as XFM, WMPG will still be subscription free. The only change for listeners should be a higher quality for those with digital receivers.
Brad Land’s memoir, “Goat,” published in 2004 by Random House, is a coming-of-age tale made extraordinary not by the fact that it is a story of a young man growing up, but rather by the culture of violence in which growing occurs. Land’s first brush with this violence comes when he is kidnapped and savagely beaten during a college party in his hometown of Florence, South Carolina.

The Maine Climate Campaign is an assembly of students from several Maine colleges and universities working on various fronts to enact stronger climate protection policies. Owing to my involvement with this campaign, I recently carpooled with some other USM students to attend the Third Annual Northeast Climate Conference held at the University of Vermont in Burlington.
President Richard Pattenaude announced the death of a bill that if passed would have forced the University to explore the cost of establishing a football team at USM. Fortunately, in this time of budget cuts, the Education Committee decided to encourage the school to consider the idea at a more appropriate time.
When the temperature is below zero, down jackets cease to be effective.
Forty-five minutes of standing still in these temperatures makes one contemplative. It is easy to see the appeal of television, microwaves and thermostats after hanging in a harness dodging chunks of ice for the better part of an hour.

The USM Police Department sent out a campus-safety-alert for students on the campus to be aware of Eric Tillotson. Students who see Tillotson are asked to call USM police at 780-5211. Tillotson is described as 6’4″ with short wavy brown hair and blue eyes and is known to frequent the Old Port.

After an hour and 22 minutes of extensive and contentious discussion, the 33rd Student Senate voted in favor of “showing support” for a proposal to create a referendum in the upcoming election that would allow voters to end constituencies in the USM Student Senate.
The Portland campus parking garage, with its 1,150 car capacity, opened in January 2004 with good intentions and the promising slogan “We have a spot for you!” However, according to some faculty and some students at USM, those good intentions are not good enough.
In the first round of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) tournament play the Lady Huskies secured their 26th consecutive win of the season downing the Maine Maritime Mariners 83-67. Though the Huskies were favored to win in the opening round of play, the victory did not come easily.
Men’s Ice Hockey: USM won its first ECAC East playoff game in six years, defeating the Thoroughbreds of Skidmore College 6-1 last Saturday, February 26, in Gorham. Junoir forward Matt Mendoza (Rockland, MA) scored two goals for the Huskies while adding a pair of assists.
