By The Student Engagement and Leadership (SEAL) Team
To our new, transfer, first year and returning students: welcome to the pack! We are all geared up for an amazing year and cannot express enough how excited we are to be in-person, on-campus and ready to go. The staff within Student Engagement and Leadership have been working diligently this summer to ensure the next nine months are full of inclusive experiences and opportunities for all of our USM community members.
For all of you who do not know us, we are Student Engagement and Leadership or S.E.A.L. for short! SEAL strives to empower students to cultivate their passions through meaningful connections that strengthen interpersonal and social development to reach their highest potential. Research shows students who become more engaged within their campus and communities tend to perform better academically. Participating in engagement opportunities encourages personal growth, self-advocacy, building connections, and a sense of belonging in clubs, organizations, and communities.
That means: SEAL is busy all year providing weekly programs, traditional events, leadership workshops, Recreation (Intramural & Club Sports), Student Government Association, WMPG (University Radio Station), and the Free Press (University newspaper). With “student focused, every day” as our motto, we tailor our programming to be inclusive, diverse, barrier-free and accessible in a safe and welcoming environment for all students.
We love what we do and nothing makes us happier than seeing students at events, interacting with one another and bringing life to campus. Look for us on Instagram or the Husky Hub to learn more about our traditional events like Weeks of Welcome events (August 28-September 10) and Homecoming & Family Weekend (October 12 – 15). If those do not match your style, then join us as we cheer on our amazing athletic teams or chill at our classic arts and craft nights.
If you have ideas, if you don’t see something being offered that you are interested in, please come find us. Our offices are located on the Portland Campus (McGoldrick 3rd floor) and the Gorham Campus (Brooks Student Center Suite 119) and our doors (and emails) are always open to feedback.
Welcome to the University of Southern Maine, or as we fondly say, USM and Good Luck in the start of the semester. We’re looking forward to getting to know you!

Hi! Is there a newsletter, or a place where all these events are posted? I would love to get involved!
