Husky Hut meeting place
Sen. Andrew Goodman is investigating possible locations for meeting space on the Gorham campus. He suggests the Senate meetings be held in the Husky Hut. The Husky Hut is not reserved, but on hold. The senators voted 11 to 2 to have their Oct. 4 meeting in the Husky Hut.
Mentoring program in the works
Sen. Mike Norton brought up his concerns about the Senate-wide community service project. Sen. Dorn McMahon suggests mentoring children at Gorham High School. Shawn Quinn, board of student organizations secretary, supports the mentoring program.
Smooth Student Communications Board meeting
The Student Communications Board had its first meeting of the year. Members of WMPG discussed concerns about the construction starting this winter for the parking garage. The building that houses The Free Press and WMPG is not soundproof, and the anticipated noise pollution from the construction presents an issue for the radio station. Currently, The Free Press is also looking for people to work at the paper.
Joe Austin speaks
Joe Austin stopped by to talk about his new position at USM. Austin is the Dean of Student Life. He “coordinates all activities for students outside of the classroom,” said Secretary Gretchen Chesley.
The Maine Scholar seeks support from Senate
Darryl Morazzini submitted a proposal for the Senate to support The Maine Scholar, a journal of ideas and public affairs the Honors Program of the University of Maine System publishes. The journal is distributed over USM and although it will remain tied with all other schools within the University of Maine System, it will be “considered a USM entity,” said Wanda Whitten, managing editor of the journal. The journal is looking for senate support to avoid some of the budget cuts, which affect other areas of USM.
Model U.N. Club and Criminology Student Association members of BSO
The Model United Nations Club and Criminology Student Association submitted new constitutions for approval by the senate. The constitutions were read during the meeting, and the motion to accept them was passed by the Senate.
Appointments Committee
Sen. McMahon was appointed as a new member of the Public Relations
Committee. The motion passed by consensus. Sen. Morazzini was appointed 12 to 1 as a new member of the Violations Inquiry Committee.
Sen. Ben Strout was appointed as a new member of the Constitutional Review Committee. The motion passed by consensus. Sen. Josh Dolby was nominated to the Parking Committee, and the motion passed by consensus. Sen. Leah Wentworth was appointed to the Space Committee, and the motion passed by consensus. There are four openings for Student Senate seats: two commuters and two residential.
