L.L. Bean Lecture Series – History of Maine’s Moosehead Lake Region

The L.L.Bean lecture series wraps up with a talk by University of Southern Maine professors Libby Bischof and Nate Hamilton on the history of Maine’s Moosehead Lake Region. Explore the history of the Moosehead lake region with historian Libby Bischof and archaeologist Nate Hamilton. Documentary materials including: artifacts, maps and photographs will highlight the history of the landscape and its inhabitants, from Native peoples and post contact European lifeways to contemporary residents and tourists. This hands-on approach to the past will provide attendees the opportunity to examine selected historic maps, photos and evidence of long-term human use of the lake and surrounding forest. We will highlight the importance of L.L.Bean, Lucius Hubbard, Thomas Sedgwick Steele, and the Maliseet people, as well as Mount Kineo, Indian Pond, and the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad to both the history and the future of the Moosehead Lake Region.Bischof is a Professor of History at USM and the Executive Director of the Osher Map Library. A nineteenth-century American cultural historian, Professor Bischof specializes in the history of photography, particularly in Maine, and is the co-author of Maine Photography: A History, 1840-2015.
