Mononucleosis, often referred to as “mono”, is a very common viral illness often caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). About 90 percent of people over age 35 have antibodies to mono in their blood, which means that they have been infected with it, probably during early childhood.

USM defeats UMass-Dartmouth
In Little East Conference action last Wednesday, at The University of Southern Maine’s Hill Gymnasium, the women’s volleyball team challenged the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth (UMD) to a competition that took a full five sets to decide. USM took the final set, taking the 3-2 win.

Tony Dungy, the coach of the undefeated Indianapolis Colts, has been having a disturbing recurring dream this week. In the dream, Warren Sapp unexpectedly bursts out of Dungy’s birthday cake and proceeds to smear icing all over Peyton Manning’s face and uniform.
Men’s soccer triumphs over Colby-Sawyer
The University of Southern Maine men’s soccer team defeated Colby- Sawyer 1-0 late in the second half of Thursday’s home game played in Gorham. Andy Budelman, a junior player scored the only goal of the game with seven minutes of play left in the game. The goal scored by Budelman was a header shot for his third goal of the season, assisted by junior Zach Rossignol who kicked the corner shot.

The term “header” is used when a player uses their head to either pass or shoot at the goal using only their head to guide the ball. The term is used to describe the particular type of shot that is taken.

What is a “handoff” in football?
A handoff is a term used to describe the exchange of the ball from the quarterback to the running back on a running play. When the ball is snapped to begin the play, the quarterback takes the ball from the center and then proceeds to “hand it off” to the running back.
USM alum named coach
Former graduate of the University of Southern Maine, class of 1979, Karl Henrikson will take on the role of the 15th men’s basketball coach for the University. He accepted the position, following the resignation of Dan Costigan who coached the team for the past seven years.
Meningitas vaccine – protect yourself!
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), there is a modest, increased risk of bacterial meningitis on college campuses. It strikes about 3000 Americans each year causing more than 300 deaths annually. It is estimated that 100 to 125 cases of meningococcal meningitis occur annually on college campuses and 5 to 15 students die as a result.

Why does a corner kick happen in soccer?
When the ball passes completely over the goal line on either side of the net so a goal is not scored, a corner kick is taken by a member of the attacking team. The ball can pass over this line either in the air or on the ground, and it must have been last touched by a member of the defending team.
Former Huskies to be inducted into Hall of Fame
The Husky Hall of Fame will soon induct new members during the Hall of Fame banquet which will take place during the Husky Homecoming Weekend (September 19-21) on the evening of September 20.
The seven former Huskies being enshrined are: Joleen Gardner Auger, Class of 1988, a former Player of the Year and USM’s all-time leading hitter in softball; Jim Broughton, Class of 1992, a two-time All-American an a member of USM’s first NCAA Division III national championship baseball team; Dave Flacco, Class of 1995, a two-time All-ECAC in hockey; Tiffany Dickinson Fregeau, Class of 1993, a two-time regional All-American forward in field hockey; Bill Hartley, Class of 1988, an All-Little East Conference in men’s basketball; Kyle Hutchins, Class of 1983; an All-New England player and a member of the men’s soccer team that reached the NAIA Final Four in 1979; and Lori Towle, Class of 1996, a two-time All-Little East Conference player in women’s basketball.

USM’s Club Sports program is back in full swing again this semester with a wide range of sports for students to enjoy. Among the sports available to students this semester are tennis, broomball, volleyball, six on six soccer, and five on five basketball. The deadline for registering for tennis and broomball is Sept.

A new type of contraceptive, called the NuvaRing, has recently been approved for women. It’s a soft, flexible transparent ring that’s about two inches in diameter and one-eighth of an inch thick. It delivers low doses of two female hormones, estrogen and progestin.

In field hockey, what is a bully?
Contrary to what you may think, a bully in field hockey is not an overly aggressive, oft penalized player. A bully is actually a neutral re-start to play following a stop in the action, much like a face-off in ice hockey.
