The University of Southern Maine women’s volleyball team ended its season on Nov. 8, with a 3-0 loss to Plymouth State in the Little East Conference (LEC) tournament semi-finals. USM, playing without team leaders Cat Lewis and Mandy Desert, struggled to fend off Plymouth State’s strong attack and was knocked from the LEC tournament in straight sets.
The game marked the conclusion of a strong season for the Huskies. At 19 wins and 12 losses, the huskies completed their best season since volleyball was reinstated as a varsity sport in 1996. In addition, head coach John Razsa was voted LEC coach of the year, and two huskies were named to the All-Conference team. Junior defensive specialist Meghan Bristol, Fairfield, CT, who led the Little East Conference in digs per game, earned first team honors.
Sophomore outside hitter Amanda Starkey was named second team all conference. Razsa said Starkey was an obvious all conference selection. “Coaches have recognized her abilities and adjusted their defenses in an attempt to stop her great hitting.” Razsa added that Meghan Bristol was very deserving of the honor bestowed upon her. “She puts in non-stop effort on the floor everyday and plays with lots of heart. She is not just a top defensive player, but the leader of our [defense].”
