For the past few weeks it has become a frequent occurrence to see multiple Huskies named players of the week by their respective conferences. Last week was no exception.
Freshman Tiffany Jones of the women’s basketball team leads the honor roll for last week. Jones notched her fifth consecutive Little East Conference Rookie of the Week honor and seventh for the season. Jones also tallied her fourth Co-Player of the Week by the Maine Women’s College Basketball Coaches Association to go along with her individual honor earlier this season.
Last week, Jones scored 26 points at UMass-Boston and also had a 27 point second half explosion at Keene State en route to game total of 30 points. Jones set a school record against UMass-Boston by sinking 16 free throws, helping her team to a pair of wins for the week. Jones currently leads the Little East Conference with her 18.7 points per game average. She is among the team leaders in free throw percentage (.765), shooting percentage (.482), and rebounds (4.4).
Sophomore guard Mike Francouer of the men’s basketball team was honored for his performance last week being named Co-Player of the Week by the Maine Men’s Basketball Coaches Association. Francouer joins teammate Jason Levecque as the only two Huskies to win this award this season.
Last week Francouer helped lead the Huskies to a win over UMass-Boston by throwing down 25 points with three assists and two steals. Francouer had a strong performance against Keene State with 15 points, 5 assists, and three steals. Francouer leads the Huskies in field goal percentage (55.7) and steals (31). On the season, Francouer is averaging 16.2 points per game which is second on the team.
Holly Manning of the women’s hockey team earned ECAC Div. III Women’s East Player of the Week honors. This is the second time this season that Manning has won this award. Manning also joins fellow senior teammates Amy Matuewezski and Katie True as the only Huskies to win the award.
Manning hit the back of the net scoring five goals and one assist in three consecutive games. Manning also scored her eighth career hat trick and second of the season against the Salve Regina Lady Seahawks. Manning leads the Lady Huskies in scoring with 20 goals and seven assists for 27 total points. Manning also reached another peak by being the only Lady Husky to have two 20-goal seasons in a career in the five-year history of the women’s hockey program.
Kim Brewer of the women’s indoor track and field team was named Little East Conference Field Athlete of the Week last week. Competing in five events last week, Brewer equaled her own high jump school record by leaping 5 feet, 1.75 inches that she set at the USM Invitational in January. She won the long jump, finished second in the high jump and 55-meters, and fourth in the 200 meters accumulating 36 of the 122.5 meet-best points for the USM narrow victory over runner-up New York University in the six-team USM Co-Ed Invitational.
