LETTER FROM THE EDITOR:

The Free Press team has been working hard, both on finding relevant and interesting news topics, as well as consistently posting to our social media platforms. Our team is always looking to have new members and over the past few weeks we’ve gained some amazing new contributors who will be covering Portland’s local music scene.

Next week, we will not be publishing, but instead be hosting a bake sale (the date to be announced) in hopes to raise some money for our trip to NYC. Nine of us will be headed to the College Media Association Convention (CMA), which takes place in the heart of Times Square each year during the month of March.

This conference gives our editor team a chance to learn what it’s like to professional work in the field of Journalism. There are a variety of classes each day at every hour, in which students get to choose from. It’s a great opportunity for us to make connections, seek advice on all things newspaper related and learn from peers who have worked their way up to professional positions at places like the New York Times and the Boston Globe.

We will depart by bus at 6:00 a.m. this Saturday, and return the following Tuesday evening. During this trip, I’ve decided I would like to take snippets of film, to document the experience of our team and to show others who may someday be interested in joining the team. We love what we do here at the Free Press, and although it can be stressful at times, it’s worth every second for moments where we get to truly express ourselves. From our trip, we’ll bring back what we’ve learned to other staff members who didn’t get the chance to go, and hopefully build up even stronger skills than we already have.
