Debt in the United States has moved to the forefront of the political agenda in Washington D.C., and recently, something has been done to relieve some of it.
The amount students are borrowing to pay for higher education has continued to rise in recent years. This is most likely due to a decline in state and federal funding for education as well as increases in tuition and fees at higher education institutions. Student debt is particularly an issue in the Northeast. In a recent report, New Hampshire ranked first at $31,000 and Maine second at $29,983 in states with the highest level of average student debt.
