1.) The Front Room: This Munjoy Hill establishment has the best Bloody Mary’s in town, hands down. You could practically make a salad with all the garnishes. Thick sliced bacon and real maple syrup do their best to make up for the hour-plus waits on weekends, so it might be best to save a visit to The Front Room for a weekday morning. Maybe after a Wednesday or Thursday night at the Asylum? 73 Congress St.

2.) Ohno! Café: If you happened to over do it the night before, and would rather spend your day with the cast of “Entourage” than the brunching masses of Portland, head to Ohno! Café. Their breakfast sandwiches and coffee are both standouts, and the staff won’t mind if you keep your shades on while ordering in single syllables. 87 Brackett St.

3.) Uncle Andy’s Café: Perhaps you had an unexpected overnight guest, but you also want to keep it on the down-low while having breakfast. Uncle Andy’s in South Portland is off the beaten path and is the most bang for your buck — two eggs, toast and home fries with bacon or sausage for $5.25. Andy himself is a stand up comedian who usually works the grill, so grab a spot at the counter and you’re likely to have him try out some jokes on you. 171 Ocean St., South Portland

4.) District: Having opened earlier this year on High Street, District levels the playing field with their signature all you can eat chicken and waffles. This surefire hangover cure also saves you from having to decide between sweet and savory with breakfast options including blueberry pancakes, Huevos Rancheros or corned beef hash. It’s the best of both worlds. 45 Danforth St.

5.) Local 188: Besides the Bellinis and the breakfast burrito, Local 188 offers both  friendly staff and casual ambiance with ample seating. It’s perfect for recapping the events of the night before, but make sure to keep the conversation PG. It’s not uncommon for children and grandparents to be enjoying an English muffin there too. 685 Congress St.

This list seems to have been composed based on the notion that USM students have big wads of cash left over in their wallet from the night before. Local 188? Front Room? A little pricey and not very student friendly. Why was there no mention of Becky’s? Marcy’s? The Bayou Kitchen? And if you’re going to mention a great breakfast place in SoPo, then you failed by naming Uncle Andy’s. A successful reference here would have been the Q Street Diner–same SoPo neighborhood, but way better food and unbeatable prices for the quality.

We are an alcohol and drug saturated society…so sad…the ugliness and loss that parallels the loosening up and euphoria of enjoying oneself through artificial mood altering should be better illuminated…I’ll start with this visual: my drunken 81 year old father laying in a parking lot with a bloody head. We can all be grateful he tripped before reaching his car. Its my wish that the widespread overuse of drinking and drugging is not treated as a hilarious joke accepted by most as the norm…It was sickening to see Hannafords and Shaws beef up their alcohol and liquor aisles, front, center and glorious. The most sickening sight of all are young people piling up the beer, booze and wine on the conveyor belt at Forest Ave Hannaford, where it seems most busy serving this population…I say to myself, can’t you find something better to do?
