‘Sucker Punch’ lacks more than just clothing

Marketed as empowering to women, “Sucker Punch” proves to be just the opposite — Lolita-esque characters prancing about in tiny skirts and fishnets seem to be more about fetishism than empowerment. Baby Doll and her fellow femme fatales appear weak and one-dimensional, much like their dialogue.

Part-time workers and volunteers essential to athletic department’s success

Posted on March 31, 2011 by in Sports

USM athletics administrative assistant Melissa Rowe (Left, in white), who works the ticket gate at men's and women's basketball home double headers at Hill Gymnasium, is just one of many who lend the athletics department a hand at USM athletic events.

The scene at a USM sporting event may not seem that complicated to the average fan. The players take the court for warm-ups, their introductions are made and the game is played. But diving deep into the ins and outs of the anatomy of an athletics event at USM reveals itself to be more complex than you would expect. And the athletics department wouldn’t be able to run them in a professional manner if it wasn’t for the help they get.

USM students need a lesson in school spirit

Posted on March 28, 2011 by in Sports, The Neill Spiel

A group of USM students celebrate after a basket at a men's basketball game in 2008. Attendance at men's and women's home basketball games has been nearly cut in half in the last six seasons, and a lack of student support seems to be a catalyst in this draught of school spirit.

When I walk into USM’s Warren G. Hill Gymnasium on game day in Gorham, I am immediately struck by the the aura of competitive Division III basketball. The two teams go through the motions of warm-ups, while their adrenaline is fueled by the latest hip-hop hits, all on a glistening floor with the proud Husky logo blanketing its center. But where are the students?
