Huskies picked 8th in preseason coaches poll

Th USM women’s ice hockey team has been predicted to finish eighth among the 12 teams in the 2010-11 ECAC  (Eastern College Athletic Conference) Women’s East Preseason Coaches’ Poll released recently following a vote by the league’s head coaches.

The Huskies, beginning their 13th varsity campaign, picked up 60 points in the poll.  Defending league champion Norwich University was tabbed by the coaches to finish first, collecting seven first place votes and 138 points. Manhattanville College was right behind with four first place votes and 134 points.  Holy Cross garnered the final first place vote and 123 points to round out the top three.

Following the top three were Saint Anselm College with 109 points, the University of Massachusetts Boston with 89, New England College with 81, Salve Regina University with 77 and USM with 60.

Rounding out the poll were Castleton State College, Nichols College, Saint Michael’s College and Plymouth State University.

Fifth-year USM head coach John Lauziere returns 16 players from last year’s squad who finished the regular season 11-13-2 overall and 9-10-0 in league play.  The Huskies begin the 2010-11 season with a three-game home stand.  They host Plymouth State to open their 25-game schedule on November 6 (4:00 p.m.), followed by games with Saint Michael’s and Norwich on November 12 (7:00 p.m.) and November 13 (4:00 p.m.), respectively.
